WHEN TO CLEAN GUTTERS IN THE GORGE

The short answer is twice a year, and the fall one matters most. Homes under Gorge tree canopy fill their gutters faster than almost anywhere in the Northwest, and the timing of the fall cleaning decides whether the first big storm of the year runs down the downspouts or over the edge.

THE GORGE CALENDAR

• October through December, after leaf drop. This is the most important cleaning of the year. Big-leaf maple and cottonwood come down over about three weeks; fir needles keep coming all winter. If you clean too early, the gutters refill before the rain arrives. If you clean after the drop, they stay clear through the winter.
• Spring, March or April. Winter wind and the last of the needle fall leave a second load. A spring cleaning clears it before the summer dry-out, when leftover debris compacts into the felt that blocks downspouts.
• A post-drop touch-up for heavy-canopy lots. A house directly under fir or maple can fill a gutter again in a few weeks. For those lots, a second short visit after the final drop is cheaper than an overflow.

THE WET SIDE: MOSS AND HEAVY RAIN

On the wet side of the Gorge, the trouble is moss and heavy rain. Fir needles and leaf litter hold moisture against the fascia, moss builds where water lingers, and once the downspouts pack, winter rain has nowhere to go. That water rots trim, stains siding, and pours out at the foundation. Hood River, Odell, Parkdale, Dee, Mount Hood, Cascade Locks, Stevenson, Carson, and Underwood all sit on this side of the line.

THE DRY SIDE: NEEDLES, WIND, AND DUST

On the dry side of the Gorge, the trouble is pine needles, wind, and fire-season dust. Needles slip through cheap screens and mat into a felt that water can't pass, and the east wind can refill a gutter weeks after it was cleaned. Mosier, The Dalles, White Salmon, and Bingen homes often need the spring visit as much as the fall one.

FIVE SIGNS IT'S TIME

• Water sheeting over the front edge of the gutter in a normal rain.
• Plants growing out of the gutter. Seeds land in the litter and treat it as soil.
• Dark streaks or staining on the siding below a run.
• A run that has started to sag. Wet debris weighs several pounds per foot.
• Nothing coming out of a downspout during a rain, or water pooling at the foundation below it.
